SDNY GRAND JURY — 2019 EPSTEIN INDICTMENT The Southern District of New York convened a grand jury that returned an indictment against Jeffrey Epstein on sex trafficking charges. PROCEEDINGS: - Grand jury presented with evidence from reopened investigation - Multiple victim witnesses testified - Physical evidence from property searches presented - Documents and records submitted - Resulted in two-count indictment (sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking) SIGNIFICANCE: - Represented the first serious federal prosecution of Epstein - Bypassed the controversial 2007 NPA by bringing charges in a different jurisdiction (SDNY vs. S.D. Florida) - SDNY prosecutors argued the NPA did not bind their office - Indictment covered conduct from 2002-2005 in New York and Florida The grand jury's work led to Epstein's arrest on July 6, 2019, at Teterboro Airport upon returning from Paris. Grand jury proceedings are sealed by law; public information comes from the indictment and related court filings. Source: SDNY / DOJ Available at: https://www.justice.gov/epstein/court-records
