SUPERSEDING INDICTMENT (S2)
The Grand Jury charges:
COUNT SEVEN: Sex Trafficking of a Minor
(Title 18, United States Code, Section 1591)
In addition to the original six counts returned in the July 2020 indictment, the Grand Jury returned a superseding indictment adding a charge of sex trafficking of a minor.
ORIGINAL COUNTS (July 2020):
Count One: Conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts
Count Two: Enticement of a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts
Count Three: Conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity
Count Four: Transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity
Count Five: Conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors
Count Six: Perjury
ADDITIONAL COUNT (March 2021):
Count Seven: Sex trafficking of a minor — alleging that Maxwell recruited, enticed, and transported a specific minor victim for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts
SIGNIFICANCE:
The sex trafficking charge carried a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life imprisonment. This count was ultimately one of the charges on which Maxwell was convicted at trial in December 2021.
Maxwell was found guilty on five of six counts on December 29, 2021, and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on June 28, 2022.
