Epstein Filed: January 6, 2020 Court: Superior Court of the Virgin Islands USVI Attorney General Denise George filed a civil enforcement action against the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, alleging that Epstein used his properties in the U.S. Virgin Islands as the base of operations for a sex trafficking enterprise spanning more than two decades. KEY ALLEGATIONS: - Epstein trafficked and sexually abused young women and girls on Little St. James Island - The trafficking enterprise operated from approximately 2001 through 2018 - Epstein used a network of shell companies to obscure the enterprise - Employees and associates facilitated the trafficking operation - USVI government entities were used to support Epstein's operations through tax incentives - Epstein brought victims to the USVI from other states and countries RELIEF SOUGHT: - Dissolution of Epstein's corporate entities operating in the USVI - Seizure and forfeiture of the two islands (Little St. James and Great St. James) - Restitution for victims - Civil penalties - Disgorgement of economic benefits obtained through the trafficking enterprise SIGNIFICANCE: The USVI AG's lawsuit was one of the most comprehensive civil enforcement actions related to the Epstein case, documenting the operation of the trafficking enterprise at a territorial level. The case resulted in a significant settlement with the Epstein estate. AG Denise George was subsequently removed from her position by USVI Governor Albert Bryan Jr. in January 2023, reportedly in connection with the filing of a related lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase.
