NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION — FOIA REQUEST
FOIA Request Number: 2020-XXXX-F
Subject: Records Mentioning Jeffrey Epstein
Agency: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
Date Filed: June 2020
REQUEST SCOPE:
This FOIA request sought all presidential records from multiple administrations that referenced Jeffrey Epstein, including:
- White House visitor logs documenting any visits by Epstein
- Presidential correspondence mentioning Epstein
- Briefing materials or memoranda referencing Epstein
- Records of any presidential actions related to Epstein investigations
- Communications between White House staff regarding Epstein
RESPONSE:
NARA responded that presidential records are subject to different access restrictions than standard federal records:
- Records from recent administrations may be restricted under the Presidential Records Act for up to 12 years
- Earlier records may be available subject to review
- Some responsive records were identified but subject to ongoing review for potential restrictions
RELATED RECORDS ALREADY PUBLIC:
Certain Epstein-related presidential records were already publicly available:
- White House visitor logs from administrations that released them voluntarily
- Published photographs of Epstein with various political figures
- Contemporaneous news accounts of Epstein's political connections and donations
SIGNIFICANCE:
The request was part of a broader effort by journalists, researchers, and public interest organizations to document the full extent of Epstein's connections to government officials and to understand whether his political relationships influenced the handling of investigations.
