DEPARTMENT OF STATE — FOIA RESPONSE Subject: Passport Records — Jeffrey Edward Epstein Agency: Bureau of Consular Affairs Date: 2020 PASSPORT ANOMALIES: EXPIRED FOREIGN PASSPORT: During the July 2019 FBI search of Epstein's Manhattan residence, agents discovered in his safe an expired passport issued by a foreign country: - The passport contained Epstein's photograph - It was issued under a name different from "Jeffrey Epstein" - The passport listed a country of residence other than the United States - It had been issued in the 1980s and contained entry stamps from multiple countries U.S. PASSPORT RECORDS: State Department records for Epstein's U.S. passport showed: - Multiple passport renewals over several decades - Extensive international travel to countries including: - United Kingdom (frequent) - France (frequent) - Various Caribbean nations - Middle Eastern countries - African countries - Travel patterns consistent with the flight log records QUESTIONS RAISED: The discovery of the foreign passport raised numerous questions: - How was the passport obtained? - What purpose did a fraudulent identity document serve? - Were intelligence agencies involved in its issuance? - Was it used for travel to countries where Epstein might have wished to conceal his identity? PROSECUTORS' USE: Federal prosecutors cited the foreign passport in their bail arguments as evidence that Epstein posed a flight risk. The passport demonstrated access to false identity documents and international resources that could facilitate flight from the jurisdiction.
