DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE — EPSTEIN DOCUMENT LIBRARY
INITIAL PUBLICATION ON JUSTICE.GOV/EPSTEIN
OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS
The United States Department of Justice established a dedicated web resource at justice.gov/epstein for the publication of case records, court filings, and related documents pertaining to the federal prosecution of Jeffrey Edward Epstein and associated cases. The initial publication of this document library represented the first centralized public release of materials by the DOJ related to the Epstein matter.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE: The document library was created to provide public access to key records generated during the investigation and prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein on federal sex trafficking charges, Case No. 1:19-cr-00490-RMB, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The library also included materials related to the parallel investigation and prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell, Case No. 1:20-cr-00330-AJN, as well as reference materials from the earlier non-prosecution agreement in the Southern District of Florida.
CONTENTS OF THE INITIAL RELEASE: The initial publication included the following categories of documents: the original two-count indictment of Jeffrey Epstein filed on July 8, 2019, charging sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors; bail hearing transcripts from proceedings before Judge Richard M. Berman; the government's detention memorandum outlining the evidence against Epstein; search warrant applications and returns related to the search of Epstein's Manhattan residence at 9 East 71st Street, New York, New York, where agents recovered compact discs containing photographs of underage girls, along with records and electronic devices.
The document library further included victim notification materials issued pursuant to the Crime Victims' Rights Act, press releases from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, and statements from prosecutors Geoffrey Berman, Maurene Comey, and Alex Rossmiller. Information regarding the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program, established under the supervision of Jordana Feldman, was also published to facilitate claims by eligible victims.
LEGAL FRAMEWORK: The publication of these materials was governed by existing DOJ policies regarding public access to court records, the Privacy Act, and victim privacy protections under the CVRA. Certain documents were redacted to protect the identities of minor victims and cooperating witnesses. Grand jury materials subject to Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 6(e) were not included in the public release.
The document library served as an ongoing resource, with additional materials added as court proceedings in the Maxwell case progressed through trial in November-December 2021 and sentencing in June 2022. The site also provided links to the FBI tip line established for Epstein-related information.
