Filed: January 2020 (amended March 2020)
Attorney General: Denise N. George
DEMAND FOR DOCUMENTS:
The USVI Attorney General filed a civil enforcement action against the Epstein estate seeking:
1. ISLAND ACCESS RECORDS:
- Complete visitor logs for Little St. James and Great St. James islands
- Boat and helicopter manifests documenting passenger arrivals
- Security gate logs and access control records
- Guest lists for events and gatherings
2. EMPLOYEE RECORDS:
- Employment records for all staff at USVI properties
- Payroll records and contractor information
- Non-disclosure agreements signed by employees
- Staff communications and incident reports
3. FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS:
- Bank records for all USVI-based entities
- Tax filings with the USVI Bureau of Internal Revenue
- Records of Economic Development Commission tax benefits received
- Property transactions and development expenditures
4. COMMUNICATIONS:
- Electronic communications stored on island servers
- Phone records for island-based telephone lines
- Correspondence regarding island operations
ALLEGATIONS:
The complaint alleged that Epstein used the USVI as a base for his sex trafficking operation:
- Minor girls were transported to the islands
- The remote location facilitated abuse away from public view
- USVI corporate entities were used to obscure criminal activity
- Epstein exploited USVI tax incentive programs
SIGNIFICANCE:
The USVI's action was notable as a territorial government holding the Epstein estate accountable for criminal activity within its jurisdiction. Attorney General George was subsequently fired by the Governor, reportedly due to concerns about the scope of the investigation.
