DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE — ATTORNEY GENERAL STATEMENTS Speaker: Attorney General William P. Barr Date: August 12, 2019 (two days after Epstein's death) Venue: Public Statements and Press Conference STATEMENT HIGHLIGHTS: ON EPSTEIN'S DEATH: "I was appalled — and indeed the whole Department was — to learn of Mr. Epstein's death while in federal custody. Mr. Epstein's death raises serious questions that must be answered." ON MCC FAILURES: "I was appalled to learn that this facility received him back after his first attempt and allowed another attempt to happen. We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation." "I have consulted with the Inspector General, who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epstein's death." ON CONTINUING INVESTIGATIONS: "Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein. Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice and they will get it." SUBSEQUENT ACTIONS: Following these statements, AG Barr: - Ordered the removal of the MCC warden - Directed the transfer of high-profile inmates from MCC - Supported the DOJ Inspector General's investigation - Ensured the SDNY prosecution of remaining co-conspirators continued SIGNIFICANCE: Barr's characterization of "serious irregularities" was notable as it came from the nation's chief law enforcement officer. While the DOJ ultimately concluded Epstein's death was a suicide, Barr's initial statements acknowledged the extraordinary failures that allowed it to occur. Barr later stated publicly that he personally reviewed the camera footage and was satisfied that no one entered the area near Epstein's cell on the night of his death.
