BAIL HEARING — UNITED STATES v. JEFFREY EPSTEIN
Case No. 19 Cr. 490 (RMB)
Judge: Richard M. Berman
Date: July 18, 2019
RULING: Bail DENIED. Defendant remanded to custody.
EPSTEIN'S BAIL PROPOSAL:
- $100 million bond secured by the Manhattan townhouse at 9 East 71st Street
- Home detention at the townhouse with GPS monitoring
- Private armed security paid for by the defendant
- Surrender of all travel documents
- Deregistration and grounding of private aircraft
COURT'S FINDINGS:
Judge Berman denied bail, finding that Epstein posed both a serious flight risk and a danger to the community:
FLIGHT RISK:
- Substantial wealth and access to private aviation
- International connections and property in multiple jurisdictions
- Discovery of an expired Austrian passport with Epstein's photo under a different name
- A safe containing loose diamonds and large amounts of cash
- History of allegedly evading accountability through wealth and influence
DANGER TO COMMUNITY:
- Serious nature of the charged offenses (sex trafficking of minors)
- Evidence of a pattern of predatory conduct spanning years
- New evidence discovered during the July 2019 search
- Prior lenient sentence appeared not to have deterred further conduct
Epstein remained in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center until his death on August 10, 2019.
