EPSTEIN CORRESPONDENCE WITH ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS Period: 2010-2015 (Post-Conviction) Sources: University FOIA Releases, Court Filings, Media Investigations OVERVIEW: Following his 2008 conviction and 13-month jail sentence, Jeffrey Epstein undertook a deliberate campaign to rehabilitate his public image through association with elite academic and scientific institutions. This correspondence documents those efforts. HARVARD UNIVERSITY: Epstein donated approximately $9 million to Harvard, including a $6.5 million donation in 2003 to establish the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics. After his conviction, correspondence shows continued engagement with Harvard faculty and administrators, including: - Invitations to dinners and scientific gatherings at his Manhattan residence - Funding proposals for research programs - Communications with prominent faculty members Harvard conducted an internal review in 2020 and acknowledged accepting $9 million total from Epstein, including gifts received after his 2008 conviction. MIT MEDIA LAB: Communications obtained through FOIA requests revealed that MIT Media Lab director Joi Ito accepted approximately $1.7 million from Epstein for the lab and $1.2 million for Ito's personal venture fund. Internal emails showed: - Epstein was listed as "disqualified" in MIT's donor database but donations were accepted through intermediaries - Staff were instructed to conceal the source of funds - Ito resigned in September 2019 after the extent of the relationship was revealed OTHER INSTITUTIONS: Epstein correspondence also documented relationships with: - Santa Fe Institute - Various individual scientists and researchers - Leon Botstein and Bard College events The correspondence demonstrated how wealth and social connections enabled Epstein to maintain access to elite institutions and individuals despite his status as a registered sex offender.
