PALM BEACH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE — WORK RELEASE AGREEMENT
Inmate: Jeffrey Edward Epstein
Facility: Palm Beach County Stockade
Sentence: 18 months (served approximately 13 months)
Work Release Effective: October 2008
WORK RELEASE CONDITIONS:
APPROVED LOCATION:
Epstein was permitted to report to the Florida Science Foundation office in West Palm Beach, an entity controlled by Epstein.
SCHEDULE:
- Authorized to leave the county stockade up to 12 hours per day
- Permitted work release 6 days per week
- Specific hours: typically 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Required to return to the stockade each evening
SUPERVISION:
- Epstein was accompanied by a private security detail (hired at his expense)
- Sheriff's deputies were assigned to periodic check-ins
- The level of actual supervision at the work release location was minimal
VISITORS:
Reports indicate that during work release hours, Epstein received visitors at his office including:
- Young women (raising concerns about the nature of the visits)
- Business associates
- Legal counsel
CONTROVERSY:
The work release arrangement was widely criticized for its leniency:
- Epstein effectively spent most of his time outside of jail
- The "work" location was his own private office, not an external employer
- The arrangement appeared to provide privileges unavailable to other inmates
- A subsequent Palm Beach County Grand Jury investigation found the arrangement was "inexplicably lenient"
SHERIFF'S RESPONSE:
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office stated that the work release program was authorized by the sentencing judge and that Epstein's participation followed standard procedures. However, an internal review later acknowledged that the arrangement was unusual.
EARLY RELEASE:
Epstein was released approximately 5 months early for "good behavior," serving roughly 13 of 18 months. With work release, his actual time behind bars was significantly less than even this reduced sentence.
