SENTENCING PROCEEDINGS — JUNE 28, 2022
CONVICTION:
On December 29, 2021, a jury found Ghislaine Maxwell guilty on five of six counts:
- Count 1: Conspiracy to entice a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts — GUILTY
- Count 3: Conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity — GUILTY
- Count 4: Transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity — GUILTY
- Count 5: Conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors — GUILTY
- Count 7: Sex trafficking of a minor — GUILTY
- Count 2: Enticement of a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts — NOT GUILTY
PROSECUTION'S SENTENCING MEMORANDUM:
The government requested a sentence of 30 to 55 years, arguing:
- Maxwell played a central role in Epstein's criminal enterprise over a decade
- She personally recruited, groomed, and abused minor victims
- Her conduct caused devastating and lasting harm to multiple victims
- She showed no remorse and attempted to shift blame to Epstein
DEFENSE SENTENCING MEMORANDUM:
Maxwell's attorneys requested a sentence below the advisory guidelines, arguing:
- Epstein was the principal offender
- Maxwell had no prior criminal history
- She suffered a difficult childhood and the loss of her father
- Prison conditions during pretrial detention were unduly harsh
JUDGE NATHAN'S SENTENCE:
Judge Alison J. Nathan sentenced Maxwell to 240 months (20 years) in federal prison, stating that Maxwell's crimes were "heinous and predatory" and that she played an "instrumental role" in Epstein's abuse of minors.
Maxwell was also ordered to pay $750,000 in restitution to victims.
