FRENCH PROSECUTION — CASE SUMMARY AND CLOSURE
Subject: Jean-Luc Brunel — Death in Custody
Authority: Parquet de Paris (Paris Prosecutor's Office)
Date: February 19, 2022
BACKGROUND:
Jean-Luc Brunel was a French modeling agent and longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein. He was arrested by French authorities in December 2020 at Charles de Gaulle Airport on charges of rape of minors and sexual harassment related to his activities in the modeling industry and his connection to Epstein.
CHARGES:
Brunel faced charges including:
- Rape of minors by a person in a position of authority
- Sexual harassment
- Human trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation
CONNECTION TO EPSTEIN:
Brunel operated the MC2 modeling agency, which was financially backed by Epstein. The agency was alleged to have served as a pipeline for providing young women and girls to Epstein under the guise of modeling opportunities. Virginia Giuffre specifically named Brunel as someone to whom she was "trafficked" by Epstein and Maxwell.
DEATH IN CUSTODY:
On February 19, 2022, Jean-Luc Brunel was found dead in his cell at La Santé Prison in Paris. French authorities ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
The circumstances drew immediate comparisons to Epstein's death:
- Both died in custody while awaiting trial
- Both deaths were ruled suicides
- Both had been accused of sex trafficking
- Both deaths effectively ended criminal proceedings
CASE CLOSURE:
Under French law, the criminal case against Brunel was terminated upon his death. The investigation into broader Epstein-related activities in France continued separately.
